AI and Robotics in Physical Therapy
The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics in physical therapy is transforming the field, offering new ways to enhance patient recovery, improve therapist productivity, and make personalized rehabilitation more accessible. These technologies are particularly valuable for patients with mobility challenges, chronic conditions, or complex injuries, enabling more precise and adaptable therapeutic solutions. Robots like exoskeletons and motorized braces provide guided, repetitive movements for patients with reduced mobility. These devices support motor re-learning, particularly for stroke patients and those with spinal cord injuries, by helping them practice movements in a controlled, supportive environment. AI systems use motion-capture and sensor data to analyze patients' movements in real time, identifying irregularities and generating insights into their rehabilitation needs. This technology supports therapists in designing programs that address specific gait or posture issues, improving treatment precision. AI algorithms can process a patient’s data, including injury history and movement capacity, to create customized treatment plans.
